| Chicago |
[Mar. 2nd, 2008|11:14 am] |
Well, chicago's been fun. Started off with Fogo de Chao on Friday after I landed, and I took in the symphony. They showed the 1927 silent comedy 'The General' with Buster Keaton. I never thought of a symphony doing a film accompanyment like that. Yesterday I did part of the Art Institute. Saw the sculpture garden, the chinese/japanese/indian art (Japanese art was weird - the display was filled with artistic depictions of kabuki actors), and the Impressionistic paintings. Didn't have time for more. But I did listen to Dream Academy's 'Please Please Please let me get what I want" while I stared at "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte." I really hope you get that reference. Anyhoo! From there to the Schedd Aquarium. I saw an alligator snapping turtle that could take off an arm, some baby beluga whales, and otters.
And then the piece de resistance, Distant Worlds at the Rosemont Theatre. I was about 12 rows back and 5 seats over from Nobuo Uematsu. Yay. There was Mario and Draco, Terra's theme, Aeris' theme, One Winged Angel... the good stuff. A nice medley from FF 1, 2,and 3. God I love the crystal melody.
A few people came in costume, and I took some snapshots. I'll upload them later when I get back home. One girl came as (I think) Edea, and she actually had specialty contacts to make her eyes yellow shot with black. So frigging creepy.
Time to check out of the hotel. Later. |

If there's one thing I miss about New Zealand, it's birdsong waking me up every morning.
My dorm was at the peak of a small hill. The driveway up it curved, and a ring of buildings was on the outside of the driving, each a little higher than the last. Then there were two large dorms, and a quick stairwell, and then another ring of buildings on the highest ground. I was right smack in the middle, so I had trees above me, below me, and before me. A fantastic view of town, which was directly in front of and below me. If I crested the hill behind me, I had an even better view of fields and woods and hillside.
And every frigging morning, I'd wake up to sunlight on my face and birds merrilly twittering away outside. Annoying at the time, but right now, I'd rather be there.
Here's a weird one: what's the creepiest cartoon you ever saw? Mine is Balloon Land. That shit eff'ed me up GOOD for a long time. I mean, he's massacring cute balloons! Wtf? |

The holidays were good, returning to work was pretty neat. My apartment is looking good, but isn't quite fully furnished yet. I need another nice chair for the living room, a bed in the guest room, and a pair of cats running around.
There's a new computer in my room, huzzah huzzah. It's XP again, but it's much harder this time around to get my old DOS games running again. Scummvm has got both Simon the Sorcerers, three monkey islands running, and I configured Discworld 1. Still working on Discworld 2, Krondor, and Master of Magic. I still can't believe Terry Pratchett has alzheimers. That just sucks.
Yesterday I went down to the zoo in Wichita, which was generally amazing. Some fantastic displays there. Big cats and gorillas, what more could I want? And we'd just gotten out of a cold spell, so everything was quite frisky. Including the giant anteater that was giving the other giant anteater a piggyback ride. Yeah, that was not something I had ever been subjected to before >. |

Have you ever flown through a lightning storm? With bolts arcing from cloud to cloud, illuminating the heavens for a microsecond every few seconds? And it all looks so close you could reach out your hand and touch it? I highly recommend the experience, turbulence and all.

| | And Then I Saw Her Face | ] | Well, it's All Saint's Day. But I'm a prophet-dude myself. So for those of you wondering about the first Samuel (we'll call him Sam Prime for today)... he was a power-hungry, vicious warlord that taught himself everything about being a Bastardly Grand Vizier from scratch.
No, seriously! Sam Prime was a Judge, as well as a High Priest. So he was in charge of the religion of the Israelites, and he was their warleader against the Philistines. Eventually, they decided to get a king like their neighbors, which meant he was out of the Judgeship. So he appointed the king (if you knew that was Saul you get a cookie), and then tells him "A. You're king now, you're in charge. B, now go to place X, wait for me for Y days, and I shall show up to tell you what to do."
Ok? He didn't even know what an Unscrupulous Power Hungry Adviser was and he perfected the role from the start! Then when he's too slow getting to place X, Saul makes sacrifices to god. Woah now. No way. Just because Sam Prime can do it doesn't mean you can too. I mean, High Priest was the only job he had left. So Sam goes to a shepherd's house... and he secretly annoints David king. The youngest son, which translates into 'most used to doing whatever you tell him to." And next time we see David, he's in Saul's court, as the chief musician. Translation: Sam Prime promised a mook the kingship, then snuck him into court, where he was perfectly positioned to get info, drive a rift between saul and his heir, get supporters in the court... It was a coup! A flippity coup Sam Prime arranged out of spite to usurp the throne and become a shadow power!
Generally I approve. |

[Oct. 27th, 2007|10:54 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | complacent | ] | Ok, so when I was a wee one, I saw part of a movie, and my half-recollections are driving me crazy, so if anybody can ID this movie I'd be grateful.
My vague memories of the plot is that it was a swords and sorcery type, probably decades old now. Live action. There was this king, and he had these champions. One had super vision, one was super fast, I think one was an ogre or just plain strong? And after the start of the movie where they save the kingdom, *memory blank* and like 30 years later the king, or maybe his son, goes out to find these old champions again to save the kingdom, and so once they're all together again they're working as a team, only it's a little funny/risky 'cause they're old now, and the one with speed has aching joints, the one with super sight is nearsighted and uses a telescope, etc. I swear to god that's what I remember of the movie. It was like Legend or something in terms of age and appearance.
Has anybody ever heard of this? Did I make it up and forget it? 'Cause it sounds like an awesome concept when you think of it. Elderly supers in a medieval setting. |

| | I am the walrus | ] | If I ever leave a mark on this world, it will be from the successful implementation of two sports only the criminally insane or the fatally drunk will partake in.
The first is live-action foosball. Not soccer. Live-action foosball. You and 4 other guys grab hold of a waaaay long rod and you can only move horizontally. I haven't worked out the spinning mechanism yet. Regardless, do not attempt Live-Action Foosball on a full stomach, please.
The other is land-based crew. Take 2 or 4 shopping carts and connect them, I'm thinking either with railroad-like axles or just some lengths of chain. Now get in them and pole yourself around with long sticks. First team around the obstacle course wins! But in this case, I can't figure out how to manage a cox's seating, which means they need to face forward. And that's just as well, as looking backwards for this would probably kill you.
Anybody wanna join my land-based crew team by the way? I know a guy. We can get some grocery carts like THAT.
Oh, and work is going way well. I'm an Internet Sleuth now. In addition to the whole prophet gig. I'll tell you all about it sometime. |

Work proceeds apace. Getting through my projects. Putting on my bandanas to go to student clubs, and I wound up seeing some of Vandread at an anime club tonight. *Shudders* I mean, I'm not shuddering just because it's vandread, not exactly high society there, but they listen to it dubbed. Oh gawd my LJ is unclean now! I said the heinous D-word!

I have pics on my camera of the cutest wee screech owl. It is now my second favorite bird, coming in right behind the black eurasian vulture, which has a wingspan of 9 feet and is a truly intense bird to have flapping towards you.
The first week of jobliness continues apace. I get on really well with my boss, which is pleasant. I continue to want to wear bandanas and jeans for now, I hope that passes >.<
Also, will someone tell my body to adjust its sleep schedule already? I'm waking up 4 hours earlier than normal and it pains me greatly.

| | Someone hummin. | ] | Am now in Emporia, Kansas. Have been up since 6 am and driving most of the way there. Thank the Maker, everything that had to go in the car fit.
A word. Driving for 700 miles down I-35 with a wakazashi leaning on the rear-view seats will impart a certain Kill Bill or Snow Crash flavour to your move. It is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend it.
I can't take all the credit for this successful move. Last night I screamed HELP at a friend, and suddenly a trio of pop singers showed up and did a song and dance routine that set things right. They're real! They're really, really, real!
Tomorrow is the Signing of the Lease and the Cramming of Boxes into the Spare Room. It's a 2-bedroom 2-bath, 930 sq ft, a little more than I originally expected to pay for it, but if I said how much I AM paying for it, all my friends not living in thatch-roofed cottages would say 'shut yo mouth.' Also, tomorrow shall herald a harvesting, nay, a CULLING, of spare furniture, art, laundry equipment, and other goods and sundries around town. This is what all those years of Sierra and Lucasarts point and click puzzle games were preparing me for, I see this now.
Take it if it's not nailed down. If it is nailed down, look for loose nails.
I hope somebody on earth has that adventurer's maxim tattooed somewhere. There's a cosmic rightness to it.
Not much else to report atm. Heroes of Mana looks decent, if you were waiting for a good Dawn of Mana game. |

| | Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego | ] | In the first order of business, today's episode is entitled "Secret surprise! The way of Naruto's car: rolling smoke."
I spent the bulk of the last two weeks helping out at True Cross School, which had been instructed to move from a card catalogue to an electronic one. Which, while overdue, was not a GOOD idea, since they lacked the technical knowledge to make the most of it - let alone install it.
Hence me.
I spent the weekends of the last two weeks at drake university (did not get the job) and at emporia state (will find out in another 2 weeks). And I did reasonably well there.
Then on monday I had a bigbig jury duty day. My first ever. And it was a double homicide, Capital Murder.
Eep.
But the dude plead guilty during our lunch break. Evidently, seeing a jury can make the immediacy of a trial a lot more real. Which I understand. In other news, NEVER KILL A DUDE IN TEXAS. We had jurors who were actually quoting 'an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth' in discussing punishments for murder. Quite terrifying. And the elderly were the harshest of the bunch - they represented the majority of the people who, say, did not care if Miranda warnings had been given before a confession was made, and who felt that the defendent was obliged, not allowed, to take the stand.
And last but not least, today I took in the car for an oil change, and thereafter, it was giving off rolling clouds of smoke from under the hood. Something wasn't attached quite right and so oil was spurting out, I lost like 2 freaking hours of my life because of this. That ain't right. Especially as I had to watch right-wing fox news for the 2 hours. I came home and curled up in front of some colbert report .avi's to balance my brainbox again.
So that was my month! Oh, and I got Jaka's Story, possibly the greatest graphic novel ever. |
